Wymondham is fortunate to have various sources of information about the local history of the town: the Town Archive, the Muniment Room in the Abbey (both holding documents) and the Heritage Museum (holding artefacts). At the Town Archive, we have a large collection of local documents dating from the 17th century to the present. We also have a collection of photographs dating from the Victorian period onwards.
Currently we have indexed records of some 26,000 people and 2,000 place names (streets, field names, house names etc.) as well as 2,000 photographs from the late 19th century up to the present day. Visitors to the Archive can inspect any of the documents to which these relate and obtain copies.
Many additional items came from a local law firm. We are currently engaged in a major cataloguing project of these, designed particularly with family and property history researchers in mind. It is nearing completion and it is now possible for enquirers themselves to search on line for much of our holdings of documents relating to individual people, families, places and so on.
Requests for information can be made by visiting the Archive or by e-mail or should be sent by post, together with an SAE (suitable size for a reply).
Although the Town Council provides space for the archive and a small annual grant for running costs, and some items of equipment have been bought with assistance from the Lottery Fund, the archive is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. Donations are always appreciated.
We always need volunteers to help us with the cataloguing of the many documents we hold. No experience is required and if you think you might be interested please come and visit us and we will be happy to show you what we do. This can be an interesting and rewarding piece of work, coming across fascinating snippets of information about the history of the town and its people.
